On 15th August at 11 a.m. the annual Virgin Mary pilgrimage and mass take place
A pilgrimage starting from the church at nearby St. Bris des Bois to Fontdouce Abbey followed by mass.
For about one hundred years, the pilgrimage always took place on 8th September (feast day of the Virgin Mary's nativity) around the church at St. Bris des Bois, where the Fontdouce statue of the Virgin Mary is kept. The wooden statue, sculpted by a monk in the 14th century, was hidden in the woods during the French Revolution and only returned to the parish church, belonging to Fontdouce Abbey, after 1793.
Once the Chapter Room had been restored and other restoration work completed at the abbey in 1977, it was suggested that the pilgrimage be brought forward to 15th August and that the solemn mass should be held at Fontdouce.
The procession leaves the St. Bris des Bois church at 9.30 a.m. and makes its way to Fontdouce Abbey for an 11 a.m. Mass held in the Monks' Room.
